Based on the old Slavonic tradition, it is during the Spring, when the old dark goddess of winter, Morena, dies in flames, to be replaced by the young and beautiful Vesna, the Slovak name for Spring. Coming out of the old lore, the modern-day Slovaks have maintained the Eastern customs of water sprinkling and whipping of girls and woman; as strange as this may look to a foreigner, the whipping has never had anything to do with home violence and in the past ranked among the most popular parts of the folk culture.
Spring, naturally, is a time of rebirth; not only the religous one but alse that related to nature; associated with trees in blossom and the omnipresent greenery taking over.
