THIS IS EUROPE, BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Here, in a single, compact country, are examples of some of the best experiences that Europe has to offer. During a year spent travelling around Slovakia, I saw dramatic alpine peaks and lush river valleys; superb mediaeval architecture and luxury hotels; bustling cities and serene wilderness; and most of these free of the tourist hordes that blight such attractions elsewhere in the continent.

Where are they? Well, Slovakia is a relatively new country - independence came only in 1993 - and its former partner, the Czech Republic, has stolen much of the attention since the pair's amicable split. Many from outside the region simply don't know about it.

But Slovakia can match any of its neighbours in terms of scenery, outdoor pursuits, and great food and wine (not to mention beer). Bratislava, the capital, has centuries of history as a wine town: from the centre of the city, even today, you can see vineyards on the hills above.

Getting around is easy. By road or rail the snow-capped High Tatra mountains and winter ski fields are just 2-3 hours from Bratislava. World-class spas and hiking destinations are even closer. Slightly further afield, the mediaeval architectural riches of several central and eastern Slovak towns have earned them UNESCO World Heritage listings.

Standards of service, especially in public institutions, can be uneven. Don't be put off: the top destinations have learned fast about customer focus, and friendly English-speaking staff can be found in most places. However, many of Slovakia's most charming places are still not well-publicised: inside knowledge from a local guide is always an advantage.

As an added bonus, Slovakia uses the euro - making it one of the most hassle-free destinations in central Europe.
