CENTRAL SLOVAKIA
Its southern most area borders on Hungary. It is rich in towns considered historical gems. The mountainous landscape abundant in woods makes it a tourist-attractive area. Plenty of natural beauties and protected areas.
Nizke Tatry (the national park of the Low Tatras) - Slovakia´s second most visited and second tallest mountains (after the High Tatras). Excellent sports and wellness/spa possibilities. Profound and diverse flora and fauna. The national park is symbolized by a brown bear.
Sightseeings
Demanovská jaskyna slobody (Demanovska cave of liberty)
- the longest cave system in Slovakia.
Demanovska ladova jaskyna (The Demanovska Ice Cave)
- one of the oldest caves reported in Europe characterised by permanent ice fill.
The thermal park of Besenova
- arose at the springs of 60 °C hot mineral water with positive healing effects.
Aquapark Tatralandia
- all-year-open largest water complex and relaxation centre in Slovakia.
- previously one of the most important and richest towns of the Hungarian Kingdom down to the highest gold and silver production.
- small town in central Slovakia is most known for the popular tourist attraction - a romantic Bojnice Castle.
- a typical mountain village is a monument preservation of folk architecture. It is comprised by a complex of 45 original, almost unchanged little country houses ..... is UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site.
- Kastiel Sv. Anton / The Manor House of St. Anton
- splendid baroque-classicist chateau with a superb English park.
- the articular wooden church in Hronsek was built in a baroque style around 1725. The construction is famous for no use of iron nails. Though restored later, it has well preserved its original character. The interior comprises an organ from 1763 and is furnished with 1,100 chairs.
As a rather affluent royal medieval town in the past it used to benefit of gold and silver mining. A wide range of architectural styles to be seen, among them romanesque, classicist and baroque. Banska Stiavnica also centred natural and technical sciences and was known as a students town, having found the first technical university in the world. For the great historical value of the town and its surroundings Banska Stiavnica is UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site.
Sightseeings
Calvary
- dominating the town area, this complex of 25 baroque churches was built atop of a hill outside the town in the 1750´s .
Novy zamok (The "new" castle)
- originally a watchtower, it was built as a part of the town´s fortification system in the 16th century. Presently a six-storey building with a magnificent view of the town. Indoor exposition on the history of wars against the Turks.
Open-air mining museum
The oldest parts of the museum date back to the16th century. There are surface / with original mining buildings and machinery / and underground / 2-depth horizons, with samples of mining works showcasing the traditional mining methods all the way up to the present /
The Mining Academy buildings and a botanical garden
- established in 1764 as the first technical university in the world. With the increasing size of the Mining and Forestry academy a brand new campus area was build in 19th century, surrounded by a botanical garden. Splendid sequoia trees.
Stary zamok (The "old" castle)
- one of the town´s dominants. Originally a church, it was later fortified and re-built into a stronghold. Today the old castle offers knowledgeable expositions on the early history of Banska Stiavnica region.
